Scope and Content Note

The Coolidge family papers are a collection of correspondence, financial and legal papers, and photographs of the Coolidge family of Plymouth, Vermont, 1802-1932. The focus of the papers is John Coolidge (1845-1926), but other family members and generations are represented as well. Most significant of these is John's son, President Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933). There is also a substantial amount of material of John's father, Calvin Galusha Coolidge (1815-1878), and, because of the family's involvement in local government and politics, there are many papers concerning the town of Plymouth.

The collection is stored in ten document boxes, Doc 215-221, 390-392, and has oversize material in MS Size B, C, and D.

Biographical Sketch

Calvin Galusha Coolidge was born September 22, 1815, in Plymouth, Vermont, the son of Calvin and Sarah (Thompson) Coolidge. He married Sarah Almeda Brewer in 1844. They had two children: John Calvin (1845-1926) and Julius Caesar (1851-1870). Calvin G. Coolidge served as justice of the peace, town agent, constable, and selectman for the town of Plymouth. He also represented the town in the General Assembly of Vermont, 1860-1861. He died in 1878.

Sarah Almeda Brewer was the daughter of Israel C. and Sally C. Brewer. She had several brothers and sisters, among them Martha, Rebecca, and F. A. Brewer. In the 1850s some of the family, including Sarah's parents, moved west to Wisconsin. Widowed in 1878, Sarah married George W. Putnam in 1893. Putnam was Rebecca Brewer's widower.

Calvin G. Coolidge had a sister, Sally Maria Coolidge (b. 1822), who married Benjamin Barton Smith Billings in 1846. They had two children: Barton (1848-1872) and Sally Maria (1849-1922). Benjamin Billings went to California during the gold rush in 1848 and died in 1850 without returning to Vermont. His wife died in 1849, and the orphaned children were raised by Calvin G. and Sarah Coolidge. Sally Billings married Henry Leslie; they had four children. Letters and other documents of the Billings and Leslie families are part of the collection.

There are also a few papers of Calvin G. Coolidge's father, Calvin (1780-1853), uncle Oliver (1787-1863), and grandfather John (ca. 1756-1822).

Calvin G. Coolidge's son John C. Coolidge was born in November 1845. He married Victoria Josephine Moor in 1868, and they had two children: John Calvin, known as Calvin (1872-1933), and Abigail Grace (1875-1890). Victoria died in 1885 and Abigail died in 1890. A year later John married Carrie Athelia Brown.

Beginning in 1868, John Coolidge operated a store and post office out of his house in Plymouth. In 1875 he formed a partnership with his first wife's brother, F. C. Moor, and after a few years he sold out to Moor. His other activities included service as justice of the peace, deputy sheriff, representative of the town of Plymouth in the state legislature (1872-1878), Windsor County senator (1910-1912), and vice president of the Ludlow Savings Bank. His papers also indicate that he was executor of several estates, served as overseer of the poor, was an agent for the Vermont Mutual Fire Insurance Company, and was treasurer of the Plymouth Cheese Factory.

John's son (John) Calvin attended Plymouth schools until 1886, when he enrolled at Black River Academy at Ludlow, Vermont. Upon graduation in 1890, he intended to enter Amherst College but delayed and instead spent the spring 1891 semester at St. Johnsbury Academy in St. Johnsbury, Vermont , beginning at Amherst in the fall. Although named for his father, he was always known as Calvin and while in college dropped the John from his name completely. In 1895 Coolidge graduated from Amherst College and studied law at the office of Hammond and Field in Northampton, Massachusetts. He almost immediately became involved in politics and held a succession of public offices that eventually led to the presidency of the United States in 1923. His first elected position was in the city council in 1898, and from 1899 to 1902 he was city solicitor. He then was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1906, became mayor of Northampton in 1910, then state senator in 1911 and president of the Senate in 1913. In 1915 he was elected lieutenant governor of Massachusetts and became governor in 1918. Coolidge was elected vice president of the United States under President Warren G. Harding in 1920 and upon Harding's death in 1923 became president. He was reelected to that position in 1924 and chose not to run in subsequent elections.

In 1905 Calvin Coolidge married Grace Goodhue from Burlington, Vermont, and together they had two sons, John (1906-) and Calvin (1908-1924). The younger son died while living with his parents at the White House. After leaving the presidency, Coolidge returned to Northampton and served as director of New York Life Insurance Company, president of the American Antiquarian Society, and life trustee of Amherst College. He published his autobiography in 1929 and wrote a syndicated column on current affairs in 1930-1931. Calvin Coolidge died in January 1933.

Provenance

The papers came to the Vermont Historical Society from John C. Coolidge by way of Dartmouth College, where they had been on deposit.

Series Descriptions

I. Coolidge Family Papers
The first series includes the papers of the early Coolidge generations of John (1756-1822) and Oliver (1787-1863), as well as some Coolidge family genealogy notes. There are also recipes, poetry, essays, and some unidentified correspondence presumably written by members of the family.

II. Calvin G. Coolidge Papers
This series is made up of the papers of Calvin Galusha Coolidge (1815-1878). The papers are arranged in five subseries. The first subseries is correspondence to Calvin G., 1845-1879, and letters addressed to Calvin's wife, Sarah, or to both of them. The letters to Calvin include some personal correspondence but are primarily letters dealing with Plymouth town affairs, legal matters, and his mercantile business. The letters to Sarah are from friends and family, particularly Sarah's parents, Israel and Sally Brewer, her siblings, her sons John and Julius, and her grandchildren. Some of the letters from the Brewers are written from Wisconsin, where the family moved in the early 1850s. For October 1862 and August 1864, there are letters to the Coolidges from Sarah's brother, F. A. Brewer, who was fighting in the Civil War, and for 1862 there are letters from Ira Chamberlin, A. H. Cheney, Alonzo B. Whitney, and L. D. Miner, also soldiers in the war.

Calvin G. Coolidge died in 1878, and Sarah married G.W. Putnam in 1893. Letters after that date are addressed to her as Sarah Putnam.

The second subseries is Calvin G. Coolidge's business and financial papers. There are deeds and leases, 1854-1862; agreements, receipts, and accounts of the Farmers' Store operated by Coolidge in partnership with eight other men, ca. 1858; insurance policies, 1855-1876; legal papers for cases in which Coolidge was principally involved, 1853-1868; miscellaneous legal papers; and notes and receipts, 1825-1877. Also there are papers accumulated as the result of Coolidge's position as executor, guardian, or overseer of the Billings family, J. P. Brown, George Cheney, Calvin Coolidge (his father), Luther Franklin, C. C. Sawyer, and the Wheeler family. Included with the Billings papers are not only those created by Coolidge as guardian of his niece and nephew, but a letter to Barton Billings from his father and a few letters from Billings in California to his wife, Sally Coolidge Billings.

The third subseries has papers resulting from the Coolidges' community service to Plymouth, Vermont. Calvin's papers include legal forms he signed as constable, 1843-1865; justice of the peace, 1846-1876; and overseer of the poor, 1848-1875; and his commissions to serve as justice of the peace, 1853-1874. There are also a few ballots and circulars from the Republican party, ca. 1862. Sarah Coolidge was involved with the Plymouth Baptist Church and acquired some of their records as their secretary. They include a minute book, 1833-1898, and miscellaneous records, 1840-1890.

The fourth subseries is personal papers of Calvin G. and Sarah Coolidge. Included are accounts from the Black River Academy, a report card for Sarah as a student at the school, and rewards of merit for Sarah and Calvin. There are also invitations and tickets for various social events and an 1877 dog license.

The last subseries is comprised of papers of affiliated family members: Calvin G. and Sarah's son Julius Caesar Coolidge; Sarah's sister Rebecca Brewer Putnam; and Rebecca's widower and Sarah's second husband, George W. Putnam. Julius's papers include a diary from 1866; correspondence, ca. 1857-1885; notes of the Plymouth Notch Debating Club, 1869-1971; and school papers, ca. 1869. George Putnam's papers are diaries, 1895-1896, 1898. Rebecca Putnam's papers are from 1847 and 1854.

III. John C. Coolidge Papers
The largest series in the collection is the papers of John Coolidge (1845-1926). His papers are subdivided like his father's into correspondence, business and financial records, community service papers, personal papers, and papers of other family members.

The correspondence is made up of letters to John Coolidge from family and business associates, 1855-1925. Letters from his first wife, Victoria, 1872-1876; his second wife, Carrie, 1909 and 1919; and son Calvin, 1887-1926, have been filed separately.

John Coolidge's business papers include the partnership agreement establishing the Coolidge and Moor Mercantile in 1875 with F. C. Moor. Related to the mercantile business are excise tax records, 1868-1874; receipts and correspondence for butter sales, 1870-1878; and correspondence with fur dealers. At the end of this subseries are receipts and bills from wholesale companies from whom Coolidge purchased goods to sell in the store. John Coolidge was involved in many legal affairs such as settling estates and bankruptcy, and these cases are filed alphabetically by last name. In the cases of Isaac Churchill and Marshall Dimmick, Coolidge seems to have acquired some of their personal papers. There are diaries of Churchill, 1865, 1872, 1873, 1877, and diaries kept by Marshall Dimmick, 1901, 1904, 1905, 1909. A large portion of the business papers are receipts, assessments, and correspondence of the Vermont Mutual Fire Insurance Company, for whom Coolidge served as an agent. There are also some records of the Plymouth Cheese Factory. Coolidge's personal financial records, such as bank statements, checkbooks, tax records, accounts, and receipts, are filed in this subseries.

John Coolidge's community service records comprise constable records, 1872-1913; justice of the peace records, 1915-1916, 1925; sheriff records, 1901-1916, 1917, 1923; and militia records for the 10th Vermont Militia, Company K, 1860-1869. Also included here are papers of the Union Church of Plymouth and papers concerning Plymouth's involvement in the Liberty Loan drive of World War I.

The last two subseries are John Coolidge's personal papers and papers of other family members. The personal papers comprise invitations, 1918-1920, and miscellaneous notes. The papers of other family members include correspondence to Victoria Coolidge, 1864-1875; a diary of Victoria's father, H. D. Moor, 1872; correspondence and school papers of John and Victoria's daughter, Abbie Coolidge, ca. 1883-1888; and papers and correspondence to Carrie Coolidge, including letters written by her stepson, Calvin, 1891-1920.

IV. Plymouth, Vermont, Papers
This series contains records of the town of Plymouth, probably collected by several generations of Coolidges because of their active involvement in town government. The papers are arranged chronologically in five subseries. The first subseries is made up of tax records, 1858-1917. The second is highway records, including receipts and accounts for work done on the highway. The third subseries is school accounts, 1837-1916, and includes a group of advertisements for school texts and supplies sent to the town's school commissioner. The fifth subseries spans the years 1855-1878 and is accounts and receipts for town business and drafts of annual town reports. The last subseries is the records of the Plymouth post office. The post office was in the building where the Coolidges lived though they did not always operate it. The records include quarterly returns, 1868-1877, and correspondence and accounts, 1868-1909. Reflected in the correspondence is debate about the rural delivery routes in 1903 and controversy in 1909 about Carrie Coolidge's ability and dedication to the position of postmaster.

V. Calvin Coolidge Papers
Calvin Coolidge's papers are divided into four subseries: education, correspondence, financial records, and personal papers. The education papers are from Black River Academy, St. Johnsbury Academy, and Amherst College and include report cards, receipts and bills, and school essays and papers. There is also a copy of the 1894 Amherst yearbook, Olio.

The correspondence includes letters to Calvin, 1884-1932; letters from Calvin to Grace before they were married, 1904-1905, and in 1929-1932 when Calvin was traveling; letters from Calvin to his son John, 1919-1932; and one letter to his son Calvin, 1920. There are also a few letters written to Grace, including two from Mrs. Herbert Hoover.

The financial papers are tax records, miscellaneous accounts, and accounts of White House expenses, 1924-1928.

VI. Photographs
There are 1093 photographs in this series, most taken during Calvin Coolidge's presidency. They are divided into five subseries: I. Subjects; II. Calvin Coolidge with individuals, groups, or things; III. Calvin Coolidge at different places or events; IV. Dated photographs arranged chronologically, 1920-1925; V. Other.

VII. Miscellaneous
Miscellaneous items are filed in the last series of the collection. Included are printed ephemera such as programs, catalogs, and so on, for various schools the family was involved with, and newspaper clippings. Also a part of this series are some "collector's items" which may have been sent to President Coolidge by admirers. Included are a dollar bill issued by the Jersey Bank in 1836, signed by B. Coolidge, vice president; a one-dollar Virginia treasury note from 1862; a one-dollar bill in mint condition of the Columbian National Bank of Boston, signed by John T. Coolidge as president; manifest for the master of a schooner, The Swallow, of Plymouth signed by G. Washington as president and Timothy Pickering as secretary of state in 1796; a similar manifest from 1797, signed by John Adams as president and Timothy Pickering as secretary of state; a letter from 1708 or 1709 signed by Lords Stamford and Herbert to the Earl of Sunderland complaining about a breach of the Acts of Trade and Navigation, by three American ships from Carolina to Portugal; sale of a lot in Groton, Massachusetts, by Fairbank Moor to Seth Walker in 1740 for 260 pounds; bond by Edward and William Park of Boston to Henry Coolidge of Cambridge, 1748-1749, for 200 pounds; letter in French by the man who later became Napoleon III; document signed by Napoleon I while first consul of the republic of France on the 25th day of the 12th year of the republic; bill receipted in 1787 by Joseph Coolidge, on the back of which is an account of an accident in Lancaster, Virginia, 1827; copy of a letter from 1813 from Admiral Cochrane to the Duke of Gloucester recounting the destruction of Washington.
