Scope and Content

The Monkton, Vermont, Papers document the early organization of the town of Monkton and the lives of early Monkton families. Many of the organizational documents are written in the hand of various town officials and some precede the charter of Monkton (June 24, 1762). With these early town records are a number of genealogies pertaining to prominent Monkton families; personal, business, and legal papers belonging to early Monkton residents; and written town history. The collection occupies 1.25 linear feet of shelf space.

Municipal, business, and legal records include tax apportionments, justice records, treasury accountings, vital statistics, writs, deeds, bonds, petitions, annual town reports, receipts, etc. Personal family papers include correspondence, diaries, albums, account books, news clippings, photographs, etc. Photographs constitute a separate series [folder numbers 30-41]. Where photographs were removed from their original placement, a separation sheet was inserted to mark the location.

The collection was donated to the Vermont Historical Society in 1986 by Carl W. Hathaway of Essex Junction, Vermont (ms. acc. no. 86.16). We believe that the collection came to him from his wife, Ruth, and a long line of Monkton town clerks.

Organization of the Collection

The Monkton, Vermont, Papers are organized into six series by type of material. At the folder level the items are filed first by type of material and, when appropriate, by family name. Within the folders the papers are arranged chronologically when possible.

The series are:
    I. Town, Business and Organizational Records
    II. Genealogy
    III. Family Papers
IV. Family Papers from Other Towns
    V. Miscellaneous Papers
    VI. Photographs
