This collection contains survey sheets and background information on Vermont outdoor sculpture assembled by Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!) during the period 1992 1993. Vermont SOS! was part of a national project of the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, and the National Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Property. Locally, the project was sponsored by the Vermont Museum and Gallery Alliance (VMGA). The collection fills one document storage box (1.25 linear feet). It came to the VHS from Ann Lawless, project director, in November 1993 (ms. acc. no. 93.8).

The goals of SOS! were twofold: to raise awareness about the need to provide care for outdoor sculpture, and to train volunteers to locate and document every outdoor sculpture in the nation. The original survey forms were sent to the National Museum of American Art for entry into a database called the Inventory of American Sculpture.

The survey forms in this collection were completed by 110 surveyors organized into county teams and coordinated by the project director. The volunteers completed 242 surveys for sculpture dating from 1740 to 1993. A few of the sculptures surveyed were no longer extant.

Organization of the Collection

Each sculpture surveyed by SOS! has its own folder. The folders contain survey sheets completed by SOS! volunteers and, in some cases, photographs, photocopies of photographs, and/or photocopies of background information. The folders are arranged as it came from the SOS! project office: alphabetically by county and then by town within each county. The three counties of the Northeast Kingdom (Caledonia, Essex, and Orleans) are grouped together and are filed after "Rutland" and before "Washington." Burlington sculpture are filed in a group after "Winooski."

A folder by folder inventory of the collection follows. After that are indexes to the collection by town, title, artist, and date.

There are pictures of sculpture in the "Monuments" and "Art and Artists" categories in the VHS picture and postcard files. There may also be appropriate files in the library's "Uncat.
