The Vermont Historical Society holds papers of Vermont people, organizations, and businesses. A very small percentage of the VHS manuscript collection is cataloged on ArcCat. There are three groups of materials included on ArcCat: (1) large and significant collections cataloged under a grant from the National Historic Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC); (2) Civil War manuscript collections (the VHS has other Civil War materials not in ArcCat); and (3) recent manuscript acquisitions.

The VHS now maintains its own online catalog which includes manuscript collections: see also http://catalog.vermonthistory.org. There are many historically important manuscript collections at the VHS which have not been cataloged on computers. These collections can be identified through paper catalogs at the VHS. The manuscript collection contains unique hand and typewritten letters, diaries, account books, records of organizations and businesses, and research notes. The collection is particularly strong in family history, agriculture, railroads, personal accounts of military conflicts, religion, emigration, government and politics, and early crafts and trades.
