Vermont Community History: Hardwick

HARDWICK HISTORY COMES ALIVE!!

Hardwick Elementary School and the Hardwick Historical Society are committed to linking children to their cultural heritage throughout their elementary school years. Teachers are partnering with historical society members to create "place-based" curricula at each grade level. The following "focus questions" defined the course of study for the 2004-2005 school year:

Kindergarten - Second Grade:	What do we know about food and gardening in Hardwick, past and present? How does it relate to the history of our town? What was the Tulip Festival?
Third Grade:	What was our community like in 1850 and how does this compare to today? What did people do for work long ago?
Fourth Grade:	What can we discover about the French-Canadian culture in Hardwick, past and present?
Fifth Grade:	What was life like in the one room school houses of Hardwick in the early 1900eds and how does that compare to today?
Sixth Grade:	What can we discover about World War II and its effect on Hardwick residents?

The year ended with all students contributing an exhibit at the Hardwick Historical Society weekend open house. Many exhibits were staffed by the students throughout the day.
