Work in Marlboro: A community History Project Lucy Gratwick: Weaver in Marlboro Production Team: Emma, Zoe, Ferne.
I Lucy Gratwick grew up on a farm in Rochester, New York. She was born in 1939. She went to Sarah Lawrence College in New York City. She studied Chinese history there. Before moving to Vermont she lived in Bogota, Colombia for two years working with the Peace Corps. Lucy had some good friends in Vermont and when she visited them she liked it here so much she decided to stay.
Lucy first decided to weave in 9th grade. She started weaving professionally four or five years later. Lucy enjoys making functional objects such as clothing, pillows, blankets, and winter wear. In the 1970s Lucy and John, her husband at the time, owned a store in Brattleboro called the LJ Serkin Company. When they sold it the new owner changed the name to Vermont Artisans. Lucy's store was one of the first craft stores in New England. She owned it for seven years. Today she works out of her home studio. She also volunteers at the Marlboro Elementary School. Lucy intends to continue weaving until she has to stop.

Her work is especially inspired by native clothing from Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. Lucy's first weaving teacher was her mother.
