Work in Marlboro: A community History Project Bob and Joanne Gutt: Sweet Briar General Store Production Team: Starcie, Jackson, and Lloyd
Why they moved
Bob and Joanne Gutt originally lived in Connecticut. They moved to Marlboro in 1993 because their lives in Connecticut had become "crazy." One day Bob asked Joanne if she would like to run a small country store. So they came to Marlboro where the general store was for sale. When they bought the store it was a "turn-key" buy which means that when they walked into the store everything was there. They added a few things though, like a new ice cream freezer, more movies and a greater selection of wine. Working at Sweet Briar
Running the store is a big job. Bob and Joanne split the responsibilities. Joanne bakes desserts, makes pizza, fills out the order forms for new shipments of food, and keeps the record books in order. Bob stocks the shelves, sets out the daily newspapers and makes the occasional sandwich. They take turns running the cash register. Selling Sweet Briar
Bob and Joanne are going to sell the store. They think that the business will only get better. Bob is planning to retire. Joanne would like to find a work opportunity as a hospital transcriptionist such as she had done before they moved here. |
