Vermont history timeline

The Vermont Historical Society introduces A Vermont History Timeline, an 8-poster set with a companion teacher's guide. These educational materials are designed to provide Vermont educators with a comprehensive overview of Vermont's rich and unique history. The Vermont Framework of Standards (Standard 6.4) calls for students to "identify major historical eras and analyze periods of transition in various times... to understand the past, the present, and the relationship between the two." Through the division of the state's history into eight eras with guiding themes, this project can be closely linked with the Standards. To understand where we are now and where we are headed in the future, we must know from where we came. For the purposes of this project Vermont history has been divided into eight eras:
- Ndakinna, native cultures (prior to 1609)
- French and Indian (1609-1763)
- English settlement (1763-1791)
- Reform and agricultural expansion (1791-1850)
- Industrial expansion (1850-1890)
- Growth of industry and tourism (1890-1927)
- Emergence of modern Vermont (1927-1946)
- Modern Vermont (1946-present)
A complimentary set was provided to each public school library in the state through the generous financial support Chittenden Bank.
