Piecing together Vermont history

Offered one WEDNESDAY* and one FRIDAY each month, October 2011 through May 2012

1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Vermont History Museum, 109 State Street, Montpelier

Cost is $5 per child per class. Families with 3 or more children participating in a class or for members of the Vermont Historical Society, cost is $4 per child per class.

Recommended for children ages 6 to 12. Pre-registration is REQUIRED; space is limited.
*Please note that the Wednesday classes are full. Spaces are still available in the Friday classes.

Wednesday, Oct. 12 and Friday, Oct. 14

Abenaki History & Oral Tradition - Learn about Abenaki history and oral tradition through their stories, which have been passed down from generation to generation.


Wednesday Nov. 9 and Friday Nov. 4

The Revolutionary War & Historical Fiction - Compare historical fiction to the real story to understand the lives of Vermonters during the Revolutionary War.


Wednesday, Dec. 14 and Friday, Dec. 16

Early to mid-1800s & Art - How can you learn about history by looking at art? Find out by examining Vermont paintings from the 1800s.


Wednesday, Jan. 11 and Friday, Jan. 13

Civil War & Photography - Photographs made the Civil War a reality for many Vermonters. Look at images to learn about the lives of soldiers and their families during the war.


Wednesday, Feb. 8 and Friday, Feb. 10

Vermont Industries & Letters and Diaries - Study children’s letters and diaries to compare the lives of young Vermonters in the past with your life today.


Wednesday, March 14 and Friday, March 16

Early 1900s & Audio and Video - Listen and watch as Vermonters explain how they coped with difficult events in the early twentieth century.


Wednesday, April 11 and Friday, April 13

Mid-1900s & Newspapers and Magazines - Study newspapers and magazines from the World War II—era to learn about life on the Vermont home front.


Wednesday, May 9 and Friday, May 11

Change Over Time & Archaeology - Use the skills and tools of archaeologists to understand how Vermont has changed over time.
