Sound Proof: The Photography of Matthew Thorsen in New Exhibit
Dateline: August 29, 2011
Barre, Vt. – Speaking of historical records, here’s your chance to see some of Vermont’s musical heritage in an exhibit called Sound Proof: The Photography of Matthew Thorsen, Vermont Music Images 1990-2000. Matthew Thorsen has been documenting the Burlington, Vermont music scene for so long he has become instrumental to it. His work will be shown at the Vermont History Center at 60 Washington Street in Barre in September.
In this exhibit, Thorsen’s work was created in the mid- to late-1900s when Matt worked with film. He has since moved to the digital format and these chemical prints have become a priceless reminder of a receding era. The Vermont History Center will feature 30 of his 115 black and white photographs with accompanying audio. The interpretive audio features Thorsen describing the subject and context of images, in most cases followed by a song by the musician(s) in the photo. The exhibit will be open at the Vermont History Center throughout September. The Vermont History Center is open to the public from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Tuesday through Friday. The opening reception will be held Friday, September 16 from 4:30 to 6:30 pm.
“This exciting exhibit will be the premiere showing of Thorsen’s Vermont Music Images,” explained VHS Executive Director, Mark Hudson. “We continue to open the door for more visitors to view Vermont’s past as we will be doing this winter with the creation of new galleries at the Vermont History Center.”
The Thorsen exhibit’s audio access is via cell phone, provided by Guide By Cell and supported in part by a 2010 Champlain Quadricentennial Legacy Grant from the Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership. The exhibit is presented by the Vermont Historical Society; sponsored by Seven Days Newspaper and Creative Habitat; curated by Big Heavy World; and supported in part by the Vermont Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
